Go Green
When it comes to taking care of Mother Earth, we all want to do the right thing. We would like to reduce our carbon footprint, avoid products that harm the air we breathe and the water we drink, and purchase items that after use can be recycled in our local recycling program.
These good intentions help, but we all need to ask ourselves…what else can we do?
PIWHA members feel a responsibility to leave the earth to future generations in better shape than we were given.
Waste Hierarchy
The picture below identifies waste management activities in descending order of preference. The preferred activity is waste reduction; the least desirable is landfill disposal. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that municipal solid waste, if managed according to the waste hierarchy, can help to maximize environmental benefits.
After “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” we add the fourth “R” to represent the “Recovery” of energy from waste, which is preferred over landfill disposal.
Some PIWHA members offer ‘green services’ that include, but are not limited to, extracting value from waste by recycling and waste to energy.
